Typically a 4,000 to 8,000 Watt generator is used to power your manual transfer switch. Your generator will typically have a 30A 120/240V L14-30 connection on it.
After the system is installed you would connect your generator via a 30A power cord to the outside of your house. These cords are available in lengths ranging from 10 feet up to 50 feet. Inside at the manual transfer switch you would flip each switch from Line -> Off -> Generator. Each switch represents one circuit in your home. As each switch is moved to the generator position power is restored to that circuit (breaker). A 10 circuit switch covers 10 breakers in your home.
